For millennia, nature's hardest workers have been crafting a superfood to such exquisite perfection that the recipe has never changed.
New Zealand is one of the most remote countries in the world, where a unique untouched nature exists that can be found no-where else on earth. Bees have discovered the remotest parts of the country and are pollinating our unique plants, this in turn helps the forests, trees, shrubs and plants survive.
Bees are an essential part of the cycle of nature, sustaining our environment by pollinating flowering plants, but they also pollinate our crops, thus adding to seasonal yields of seeds and fruits. Out of the sweet nectar bees make pure honey that contains the best from these unique, untouched plants.
That is New Zealand Honey.
Honey has been used since ancient times to treat multiple health conditions.
Please note this advice is not meant to cure or diagnose any illnesses and that the research into the medicinal properties of honey is on-going.
Studies have shown that manuka honey fights the formation of plaque by attacking oral bacteria, so although we often hear that sweets are bad for us, unlike refined sugar, honey has a beneficial special effect that is unlikely to contribute to cavities.
The inflammation that causes the discomfort of a sore throat can be reduced with the unique properties of manuka honey. Often a sore throat is as a result of a cold, and the effect of honey not only fights the bacteria that causes the throat infection, but it also acts as a cough suppressant, aiding the overall recovery.
International studies have found that honey wound dressings reduced swelling and enhanced the regeneration of tissue making it an ideal wound compress. The unique properties aid the healing while beneficial special qualities assist in reducing the swelling.
Researchers have found that regular consumption of manuka honey may help decrease symptoms of multiple gut symptoms including constipation, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Although this research is on-going it is encouraging to know that a small amount of honey can provide comfort to such an essential part of our biology.
Manuka honey is different from other honeys in that it contains unique properties. There is a highly respected grading system that identifies true manuka honey. It is classified according to its unique manuka factor, UMF which is a quality trademark to identify honey that has special and unique properties.
The grading system was developed by the UMF Honey Association in New Zealand. Manuka honey manufacturers and brands can become members of the association in order to utilise the UMF logo on their packaging.
